Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
