Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
